Digital Art & Photo Competition
What is Digital Art?
Digital Art is a general term describing a range of artistic works that use modern technology as an essential part of the creative and/or presentation process. The goal of the Digital Arts & Photography Contest is to create a platform for students to showcase their creativity and imagination. This contest will be held in honor of our first year as a Chromebook 1:1 education facility at Big Spring.
About the Contest/What is the Theme?
The Digital Arts & Photography Contest is for students who want to show off their creativity and imagination. There are two categories for the competition, 1) Digital Photography (Camera based art, no digital drawing or painted)
2) Digital Art and Design (Created using digital tools to draw, paint, etc. Can juxtapose with digital photography). The theme for 2019 is IMAGINATION. See below for more details.. Participants are encouraged to create an original digital work of art that shows creativity, originality, and cleverness.
Who Can Enter?
All students currently in grades 6, 7, or 8 at Big Spring Middle School, Newville, PA are eligible to participate. Each student may submit up to a total of TWO works of art. Students must complete a Digital Art Competition Submission Form in order to register for the contest. There is no entry fee or prerequisite to participate.
What are the Contest Judging Criteria and Prizes?
All eligible entries will be juried by a panel of BSHS Art Students to narrow down entries to the top ten works of art per grade level. The top ten works of art from each grade level will advance to the final round where works of art will be judged by BSSD Visual Art Faculty. Prizes are awarded to one Grand Prize and one Honorable Mention Prize PER GRADE LEVEL. The top ten works of art will be on special exhibition at BSMS for the month of April.
The judging criteria is based on the following characteristics:
a. Creativity & Originality
• Is your design a product of your own imagination? Did you think outside the box? Have we seen this design somewhere else? Etc.
• Is your design original? No use of pre-fabricated stamping tools, stock photos, or app settings will be accepted. All work must be created by hand digitally.
• Is imagery original? Images must be unique and you may not copy any other cartoon, TV character, etc.
b. Design Style & Composition
• Design: Did you follow the rule of thirds? Did you use the white space and negative space appropriately?
• Composition: Did you use the Elements of Art and Principles of Design to arrange a good composition?
• Craftsmanship: Is the work of art executed with neatness and precision?
Deadline/What is the Timeline?
The submission deadline is Friday May 3, 2019 Participants will be notified by email of Judging results in April. A special exhibition will on display at BSMS to honoring the top ten works of art per grade level.
Entry Rules and Specifications
1. Submit your entry digitally by email to Miss Shambaugh, no later than Friday May 3, 2019.
2. Artwork must be submitted by EMAIL and will ONLY be accepted as high-resolution JPG image files
• Document size must be a minimum of 5" x 5" inches. Document resolution must be a minimum of 200 dots per inch.
Category 1 Digital Photography: Created with a camera only. No digital drawing or painted. Can digital edit colors, contrast, brightness, etc. using digital software.
Category 2 Digital Art and Design: Created using digital tools to draw, paint, etc. Can juxtapose with digital photography, but it needs to include an element of hand manipulated imagery.
5. Theme: Imagination!
• Subject and content of digital image or photograph should be inspired by your OWN IMAGINATION!
• This could include the

• An imaginary world
• An imaginary or fantasy animal of your own design
• Your own, original Manga or Anime character rendered digitally.
4. Artwork must be accompanied by a written piece to describe:
• What technology was used to create the artwork.
• What inspired the artwork.
• How long it took to create the artwork.
• What the artwork means to you (the artist) and how it fits the theme of People and Characters.
5. Digital Software Tools & Technology:
• You may use any of the following digital software or tools described below. If the digital tool you want to use is not listed, please check with Miss Shambaugh to make sure it is acceptable for the contest.
• Digital Photography Category: Any digital camera on any device including Chromebooks, Phones, iPods, Cameras, GoPro, etc. The photo can be edited using digital editing tools to enhance the photograph or it can be a raw file.
• Digital Art & Design Category: A digitally rendered drawing or painting. Adobe Create Suite, Apple Apps or Chromebooks Apps such as listed below:

6. Contest restrictions:
• You are agreeing that this is your original work.
• You retain all intellectual property rights (copyrights) of the submitted artwork.
• You acknowledge that your entry may be published on this website and other resources by BSMS.
• Entries cannot contain copyrighted materials owned by others (ex. StockPhotos, Parent/sibling created work)
• Content must be school appropriate. Absolutely no alcohol, drugs, or sexually suggestive artwork will be permitted.
